In a group

Invite AI翻訳 to a group, and it translates messages from people who tapped the join button.

Get started in 3 steps

  1. Step 1

    Invite AI翻訳 to the group

Tap “≡” → “Invite”. Others do not need to add it as a friend.

  2. Step 2

Each person taps the join button

You: “I agree & join”. Your Japanese partner: “自分も同意して参加”.

  3. Step 3

    Switch languages (if not English)

After joining, write in your language, then tap the “日本語⇄…” button.

Only people who tap the join button are translated

Tapping it yourself does not translate your partner.

  • YouTapped the join buttonYour messages are translated
  • PartnerHas not tapped yetTheir messages are not translated

Your participation applies in every group with AI翻訳 (if you stop, it stops in all groups).

If your partner cannot find the button

  • When someone who has not joined writes, a notice with join buttons appears in the group (once a day per group).
  • The buttons on the card from when AI翻訳 was invited still work if you scroll back up.
  • The first join buttons are Japanese and English (“I agree & join”). Once the language is changed with a “日本語⇄…” button, a join button in that language appears too (for Thai, “ฉันยินยอมเข้าร่วม”).
  • To show them right away, send /g guide to the group. The join buttons appear again in the group's languages (anyone can send it).
  • Instead of tapping, you can send /g agree to join (only the sender joins).

If your partner's messages are not translated (please check from the top)

Your partner has not tapped the button yet
Please ask them to tap it themselves (see above for how to show the button)

Stickers are not translated. Images and voice are translated only in a PRO group, or when the sender has PRO or a free trial (no reply to photos without text, or to images and voice that could not be read)

The automatic notice for people who have not joined appears only once a day per group.

More about groups

Switching languages

  • It starts as Japanese ⇄ English. Each group has one language pair, and whoever changes it, it changes for everyone.
  • When a member who joined writes in a language other than English, a “日本語⇄…” button appears (when the current pair includes English; at most once a day per group, and once a week for the same language).
  • The button text depends on the language, e.g. “日本語⇄Tiếng Việtにする” or “Use 日本語⇄Tiếng Việt”.
  • It may not appear for short messages or some languages, such as Chinese, Indonesian and Russian. Then a member who joined can send something like “Translate to Thai” or “Switch to Thai” to make it appear (once every 10 minutes for the same language; for Chinese, “Translate to Traditional Chinese” or “Translate to Simplified Chinese”).
  • Whoever taps the button, the languages change for the whole group. After that, how to join and the join buttons appear in the new language (only the button text shows in the chat).
  • Tap “⚙️ Choose languages” next to it to open this group's settings and choose any two languages.
  • The button does not appear for messages from people who have not joined (those messages are not translated or stored).
  • When someone reports a mistranslation (“❌ Report Error”) and the original message's language turns out not to be in the pair, the same button appears.
  • You can also choose with “設定を開く / Settings” on the card from when AI翻訳 was invited. In that case, send /g guide afterwards to show the join buttons in the new language.
  • To change it by text, send /g set ja th (language codes: Supported languages). Check the current setting with /g status.
  • A group can have just two people.

The join button

  • Tapping it posts /g agree under your name, and AI翻訳 replies to confirm that you have joined (opted in).
  • If someone who has already joined taps it, AI翻訳 only replies that they have already joined. It never makes anyone else join.
  • The buttons under the notice disappear when the next message arrives.
  • Once you join, your messages are also translated in other groups with AI翻訳.
  • Other members may tap “📌 Save Note” or “❌ Report Error” on the latest translation. A mistranslation report sends the original and the translation, with information identifying the writer and the reporter, to the operator.

Free limits and restrictions

  • Free translation is up to 200 messages a month per group (shared by all members). When it runs out, translation pauses and restarts automatically on the 1st of next month (the notice appears at most once a day).
  • In addition, each person has up to 200 a month across all groups. When that runs out, only that person's messages are not translated until the 1st of next month (they are notified at most once a month; everyone else's are still translated).
  • If a member who joined has PRO (including a free trial) and writes in the group, they automatically become the group's “sponsor” (when there is no other active sponsor).
  • While there is a sponsor (a PRO group), text translation for everyone who joined has no monthly limit, and images and voice are translated too.
  • Messages from people with PRO or a free trial do not use the free allowance (their images and voice are translated too).
  • When someone who has not joined writes, how to join is shown at most once a day per group (that message is not translated or stored).
  • Up to 2,000 characters per message. Messages whose sender cannot be identified, such as from LINE for PC, are not translated.
  • Images and voice are translated only in a PRO group, or when the member who joined has PRO or a free trial (otherwise there is no reply). They do not use the free allowance. Group voice messages can be up to 2 minutes each. There is no reply to photos without text, images or voice that could not be read, or long voice messages. Voice in either of the group's two languages is translated into the other one.
  • It works the same way in multi-person chats.

Data handling and translation accuracy
  • Text, voice and images you translate are sent to external AI providers (Google, OpenAI) for translation and may be processed on servers outside Japan.
  • In groups, messages from people who have not joined (opted in) are never translated, sent to external AI, or stored.
  • Once you join, your messages are also translated in other groups with AI翻訳.
  • Everyone in the group sees the original and the translation, so please do not send confidential or personal information.
  • AI translates by meaning, but accuracy is not guaranteed and mistranslations can occur. For important matters such as medical, legal, contract or safety topics, please have it checked by a professional. Please report any translation that seems wrong with “❌ Report Error”.

In your one-on-one chat with AI翻訳, open the menu and tap “Contact” to open the contact page. AI answers first, and if that does not solve it, our staff will reply to you in the chat. You can also email us (info@aihonyaku.jp), even if you have not added AI翻訳 as a friend.

You can also use it in your own groups and one-on-one
